Random String Nights: Art & Games
Weds 4th July 2018, 1830-2030
Helen Martin Studio @ Warwick Arts Centre.
RS:Nights is a new regular social event for people interested in digital ways of making. Bringing together producers and practitioners from across disciplines to share, play and make new connections. For each event we’ll be hosting visiting contributors from around the UK to show off their latest wares on a given theme.
Our first theme is ‘Art & Games’.
We’ll be joined by artist and games designer George Buckenham, creator of the ‘Cheap Bots Done Quick’ Twitter bot platform that was recently swept up in the social media platform’s crackdown on automation. George is Digital Curator for the experimental games festival Now Play This at Somerset House as well as co-organiser of “part arcade, part club-night” Wild Rumpus which has graced venues from GDC and SXSW to an ex-cold war fishing vessel in a London dock. George is also Lead Programmer at Sensible Object, publishers of the highly successful hybrid board game ‘Beasts of Balance’ who have recently announced a successful £3.2 million funding round to create new games powered by Amazon Alexa.
South African performance artist Anthea Moys will also joining us via Skype from Johannesburg. In 2013 she won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Performance Art where she created her “Vs.” series, embracing failure and reimagining winning as the act of learning itself. Further work exploring play and performance in public space has included the Johannesburg Pavilion residency at the 56th Venice Biennale, and earlier this year she was resident artist and researcher at The Capital of Children as part of the LEGO Foundation in Billund, Denmark.
There’ll be lots of opportunities to play and explore a host of experimental games as well as enjoy a few drinks in the company of interesting creative people.
